FTS 2018: COMPETING ACTS

We are three aspiring students creating music using only our voices. Expressing ourselves through our intrapersonal art, we built an instant connection without the need of any words. Creating this small beatbox community, made us realize that we would never walk alone again. We are exploring the uncharted complexities of what the human voice can achieve to deliver a unique experience.
“We’re taught that we make one sound and shape it with our mouth and tongue, but beatboxers can simultaneously make sounds at their lips, their larynx, and perform nasal harmonics at the back of their noses, and c  an independently vary those pitches. According to traditional phonetics, it’s impossible — but it’s not.”

Bliah, comprised of Bliss and Miah, is a comedic ukulele duo that has been performing around San Diego for a few years. They only perform original music, mostly written about boys and always composed by themselves. They began in high school and grew through out, but haven’t been able to perform as much. They are very excited to be able to perform on stage again, especially since they won’t be walking on stage alone. They would also like to say “hi mom” and thank you to all of their supporters who have come out tonight. Bliah hopes to make you laugh tonight, or at least make you smile.
Hi! I’m Chey and I grew up in Santa Barbara, CA, moved to San Diego in August of 2017 and I love it here. I took private singing lessons for about eight years, but have been singing for as long as I can recall. My biggest fans are my family members (I’m also their biggest fans); especially my mom and dad. Outside of singing, I dabble a little in guitar, ukulele, and photography—all of these picked up within the last two years. My favorite places in this world are my grandma’s house, the beach, Mt. Soledad, the Colorado mountains, and the Santa Barbara mountains. Exploring and traveling are something that I wish I could pour more of my time into! One of my goals by 2020 is to travel outside of the United States (probably to Canada or Mexico…). For my role in FTS, I cannot wait to perform what I am passionate about: singing. Music has always played a significant role in my life and the thing I love more than performing is sharing this art.

My name is Brie Hornig and I write and perform spoken word. I am a 4th year at San Diego State University and will be graduating this upcoming May. I will be pursuing a career in student affairs to support and advocate for students navigating higher education and to transform educational institutions. I started writing spoken word earlier this year, kind of by accident. I took a creative writing course last semester and had an assignment called “Where Are You From?” That question carries a lot of meaning with me being 4th generation Japanese American and the hxstory of my family. After I wrote the piece, I decided I wanted to try performing it as a spoken word piece and ended up performing it a little after one month from when I wrote it for my class. I found my passion through spoken word because we are told that academics are not intertwined with our lived experiences and emotions, but they are fully connected. Emotions are powerful and carry knowledge within them. I write to bring awareness to oppressive systems and injustices that affect marginalized communities and to honor my family’s hxstory.
